What Is Being Nearsighted Mean And How It Can Be Treated?

Nearsighted Definition

Nearsightedness or often called myopia is not a disease but a variation from normal eyesight. In this condition a person is notable to see the objects that are in a distance. That is objects that are far away appear to be blurry in this condition. Therefore nearsightedness is the case of blurred vision. So a person is said to be nearsighted if he is unable to see or view the things or objects clearly that are at a distance.

This condition can be either mild or moderate or sometimes severe. Therefore we can say that Nearsighted means the objects that are far away appears blurred or out of focus. People who are nearsighted tend to frown or squint when looking at distant objects. As I said earlier that it is not a disease but is a deviation from normal and this condition is usually a result of some other disease or condition.

Nearsighted

Near-sightedness may develop rapidly or gradually. Near-sightedness or myopia can usually develop during the age of six to thirteen years and this condition worsens during the teen years. By adolescent this problem reaches a certain level that is either mild or moderate although this condition might worsen with age. The problem of near-sightedness may run in a family that is this condition can be transferred from parents to their kids because it is hereditary.

A condition known as far-sightedness or hyperopia is just the opposite of myopia. In hyperopiathe objects that are nearby are not seen clearly and appear blurry but the distant objects appear just fine. In the case of Near-sightedness the shape of eyeball elongates but in hyperopia the size of the eyeball shortens.

Definition Of Nearsightedness

Nearsightedness is a refractive error which is very common and in this condition nearby objects appears clear but the far away objects appear blurred. In this condition the lens and the cornea refract incoming light rays because of that they focus in front of theretina instead of on the retina. Therefore we can say that near-sightedness or myopia is a condition that causes the inability to clearly see the distant objects. People suffering from this condition can read newspapers, can cook, can even sew but when it comes to reading distant signs they are unable to do so. Children suffering from near-sightedness mostly stay away from sports no matter how interested they are in sports as being active in sports would mean more strain on their eyes. They even watch television from sitting very nearby.

Signs And Symptoms Of Nearsightedness

1. Frequent headache

2. Blurred vision

3. Squinting or frowning while focusing on distant objects

4. Constant strain on eyes

5. Difficulty in viewing or seeing faraway objects or signs.

All the above symptoms and signs are easily detectable. During regular eye examinations the near-sightedness can be diagnosed by an eye care specialist.

Causes Or Reasons Of Near-Sightedness

If a person has normal vision it means that the light entering the eye falls on the retina and the brain is then able to have a clear view of the picture or image in front of the eyes. Nearsightedness happens when the eyeball becomes too long because then it prevents the incoming light rays to focus directly on retina or this problem may also occur if the shape of cornea or lens becomes abnormal.

Thus the increase in size of the eyeball is the main reason of near-sightedness or myopia because if it happens then it causes the incoming light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of focusing the light directly on the retina.

These days more and more cases of near-sightedness are coming into picture. Normally near-sightedness or myopia is a mere inconvenience and not a threat to one’s health but sometimes this problem can be very severe and progressive that it can even be considered degenerative. Degenerative or malignant myopia is a condition which is relatively rare and is usually hereditary and starts at a very early age.

Degenerative or malignant myopia is a condition in which the elongation of eyeball happens rapidly which leads to quick progression of severe myopic that may often lead to complete loss of vision. This condition also increases the risks of cataracts. This is a very rare condition though and less than two percent of the people in America suffer from it.

Treatment Or Correctness Of Nearsightedness

Near-sightedness can be diagnosed or detected by general eye check-ups and examinations. Detecting near-sightedness is easy for the eye care professionals. Near-sightedness can be treated or corrected with the following treatments or methods

1. Eyeglasses are the safest way to treat nearsightedness. They are simple to use too. One can consult their eye care professional or optician who can prescribe the right lenses to treat the problem of near-sightedness.

2. If fitted and used carefully and properly, lenses can prove to be very effective and safe. Contact lenses in most of the cases provide clear vision and along with that wider field of vision too. Contact lenses become the first refractive surface for the incoming light rays. Still contact lenses may not prove to be the best option for everyone and one must consult their eye care specialist for the same.

3. Laser surgery is the third option to treat nearsightedness and by far it is the most permanent solution. In this surgery the shape of cornea is changed permanently which in turn improve the refractive vision. This surgery can also help in eliminating the use of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Before undergoing eye surgery one must consult their eye care professional.

Summary

Near-sightedness means a person with this problem or condition is only able to see clearly the nearby objects or things and is not able to see the distant objects clearly. The far away objects appear blurred to the nearsighted person. Diagnosis of nearsightedness is very easy and can be done through regular eye check up.

Once a person is diagnosed with this condition he should seek proper medical help and should consult a professional eye care expert in order to know the best solution for his problem. It is best to treat this condition as early as possible because if left untreated this problem can get worse with time.
